I thought you would like to see some pic's of my 8ft classic ‘squadron’ clinker dinghy that i have just recently completed. i have had numerous traditional and modern boats over the years that i have worked on but until now hadn’t built one. the plan has 8ft ‘squadron’ dinghy as the design.. The "winchelsea" rowing/sailing dinghy. 8' - 0" x 3' - 10" and a dry weight of around 80lbs (36kgs). these are the original plans for this boat as i originally designed it - a multi chine clinker style dinghy that has a variety of uses. it has a keel piece instead of the keel plank to give a more traditional appearance.. Clinker (or lapstrake) construction involves the planking of the hull with adjacent planks slightly overlapping one another (in a stepped fashion). it is a method used in northern european countries for centuries and produces a hull with graceful, tapering curves to the planking which stand out to emphasize the shape of the boat..
Carvel built or carvel planking is a method of boat building where hull planks are fastened edge to edge, gaining support from the frame and forming a smooth surface. in clinker built hulls, the planked edges overlap; carvel construction gives a stronger hull, capable of taking various sail riggings , albeit ones of greater weight.. The plank, mould, and transom shapes were developed on a boat design program on a pc, and then cnc routed from the resulting files. since we built this hull, we have also built a sfd coble 15 in clinker ply, and also part built a coble 9. these hulls went together with little problem..
