Carpeting upstairs, hard flooring downstairs solution: carpet the stairs to match this is the most common stair treatment when the upstairs floor is carpeted – the cushy carpeted stairway is a visual link to the next floor and gives a hint that the upstairs space is for bedrooms.. Well, of course once the carpet was up we were left with subfloor & we had to lay new floors down. that’s why i wanted to pop in here today to just quickly answer the question we have been getting about what flooring we were putting in our upstairs…. well, the answer is… the same flooring we used in our downstairs!. The original floorboards of the cottages which, combined, now form our house were 8 1/2 inches wide but only 9/16" thick. the ravages of wear, woodworm and poor repairs over a century and a half left many gaps through which everyday items could be lost.. Personally i feel hard flooring is for downstairs only. i think bedrooms need carpet for comfort, warmth and sound insulation. as i say - only personal opinion. we are in the process of putting wood floors all through downstairs (should only take another decade). i think upstairs as well would be too much.. 85 likes, 7 comments - jane goble (@janegoble) on instagram: “thinking of painting the white floorboards grey downstairs & getting rugs. just can't quite make…”.
