1999, 21' handy billy wooden launch, built by the nw school of wooden boats in port hadlock wa, based on a classic design from william hand, powered by a honda 25hp outboard in a covered well.. The name of this design (handy billy) is an homage to famed yacht designer william hand as the lines of the handy billy are to a large degree based upon hand’s popular and efficient designs for motor launches of the early 1900’s.. A handy billy made with two blocks and tackle can be used to give mechanical advantage wherever needed..
The result is a power boat that is fuel efficient, quiet, handsome and able. the handy billy otter on her launching day we have built four of these boats, the first strictly to harry’s design, and the later three modified to be built using marine plywood.. The handy billy story: ever since reading about harry bryans’ handy billy designs in wooden boat magazine in the late 1990’s we have thought that these boats looked so good and made such good sense that we wanted to build one. in 2001, after owning the boatyard for a year, we purchased a set of plans for the 21 foot handy billy.. This quick little boat was designed and built by harry bryan boatbuilding in new brunswick, canada using lines from the popular and efficient designs of william hand in the early 1900s. bryan calls the boat the “handy billy” which is a play on words on mr. hand’s name. sara is handsome, speedy and efficient..
